A novel non-antimicrobial treatment of bacterial vaginosis: An
Diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis caused by Mobiluncus by direct gram-modifying test. Gardnerella vaginalis is a predominant bacterial species, but BV is also associated with other numerous anaerobes, such as Atopobium vaginae, Mobiluncus mulieris, Prevotella bivia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Peptoniphilus species. Currently, the role of G. vaginalis in the etiology of BV remains a matter of controversy. Gardnerella vaginalis was associated with findings of clue cells, gray or creamy vaginal discharge, amine ordor on application of potassium hydroxide solution to the discharge, pH greater than 5, and a history of more than six sexual partners.

Reprinted with permission from Hainer BL, Gibson MV. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the normal lactobacilli of the vagina are replaced by mostly anaerobic bacteria. Diagnosis is commonly made using the Amsel criteria, which include vaginal pH Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria in your vagina along with an organism called Gardnerella vaginalis. Anaerobic bacteria don’t need oxygen to survive or grow. Small amounts of these anaerobic bacteria and Gardnerella can normally be found in your vagina.

Prevention. Doctors are not exactly sure why bacterial vaginosis develops. Gardnerella reveals a classic "clue cell" under the microscope, showing bacteria adhering to the surface of squamous epithelial cells. Eponym [ edit ] It is named after Hermann L. Gardner (1912–1982), an American bacteriologist who discovered it in 1955.

Eponym Edit It is named after Hermann L. Gardner (1912–1982), an American bacteriologist who discovered it in 1955. The Gardnerella vaginalis infection of the urogenital tract, an STD, is of clinical importance in females and of epidemiological importance in males. Females suffer from vulvovaginitis amine colpitis, with a bad-smelling grey vaginal discharge with a pH of 5.0-5.5, which contains "clue cells". The urethra of males is often asymptomatically infected.
